The short version: your writing stays on your disk, and nothing about what you write is ever sent to us.
The app on your computer
A project is a folder on your disk. Bakspace does not upload it, index it elsewhere, or read it for any purpose other than showing it to you. If you put the folder in iCloud Drive, OneDrive or Dropbox, that service holds a copy under its own terms; Bakspace sends it nothing. A licensed copy checks in once each time it starts. It sends the device id and that device's secret, so our server can say whether the licence still holds. During the trial it sends the device id to start and check the trial. Neither sends anything about your projects.
Update checks
Shortly after launch, and when you ask it to, Bakspace asks our update server whether a newer version exists and, if one does, downloads it in the background. Nothing installs until you choose Restart. The request carries what any download does, your IP address and the app version, and nothing about your projects.
Usage and error reports
Bakspace sends anonymous usage and error reports to PostHog, hosted in the European Union, so we can see which features are used and what breaks. Both are on by default, and each has its own switch under Settings > General: Usage reports and Error reports. Turning both off sends nothing.
Usage reports send an anonymous install id, made up at random on your computer and not the id the licence check uses, with the app version, operating system and its version, and the kind of chip. Beside that they name what happened: the app started (and whether it is on a trial or licensed), a trial started or ended, a key was activated, a project was created or opened (with a rough size, such as 11 to 50 documents), an export ran (with its format), a snapshot was restored, or a feature such as Focus or search was used. Error reports send the same id, version and operating system, and the stack trace. What is never sent: document bodies, titles, synopses, file paths, email addresses or keys. Error messages are scrubbed of the same before they leave the machine.
What we hold
There is no account. When you buy, we hold the email address you paid with, a one-way hash of it, your licence key, the Stripe payment it came from, and whether it was refunded. For each device the key is used on, we hold an id, the label you gave it and the last day it checked in. During a trial we hold an id for the device and when the trial started. We also keep a record of each key email we send (when it went and why) so we can limit repeats. It is deleted with your licence record. Stripe handles payment; we never see card numbers. When a purchase goes through, our server also counts the sale (its amount and currency) in PostHog under a random id, with nothing that ties it to you, your email or your devices. None of your writing ever reaches us.
Getting it back and deleting it
Your writing is already on your disk, so there is nothing to get back. To have your licence record deleted, write to the address below and we will delete it by hand. That retires the key: it can no longer be activated, and devices using it become unlicensed at their next check-in. Everything keeps working; they show a quiet Unlicensed strip along the bottom of the window. Stripe keeps its own record of the payment under its own terms.
Licence keys are sent through Resend. They see your email address and the message; nothing else. If you ask for your key again, we only ever send it to the address you paid with. The newsletter list on this site is also held in Resend; every letter has an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing removes you from the list.
This site
bakspace.app sets no cookies and stores nothing in your browser. Through Vercel Analytics and PostHog (hosted in the European Union) it counts page views, clicks on the download and buy buttons, and newsletter sign-ups (which form, never the address), and reports errors in the site's own code. It also notes the site that linked you here and any campaign tags in the link, so we can tell which posts people came from.
To count visitors without a cookie, PostHog works out a one-way code from your IP address and browser that changes every day, so it cannot recognise you from one day to the next. Your IP address itself is not kept. Beyond that the site loads only the download files and fonts.
