Privacy and updates

What Bakspace sends, the switches that stop it, and how updates arrive.

Your writing stays on your Mac

Bakspace never sends your projects anywhere. They are folders on your disk; if they reach another computer, it is because you put them in a sync service of your own choosing. Spelling and readability help both work on your Mac, without a network.

What is sent

  • Licence checks. To start the trial, Bakspace sends a random id for this device. Entering a key sends the key and a device name such as Mac · Apple silicon, never the computer's own name. Once licensed, it sends the device id and a secret each time it starts, so the licence server can say it is still licensed. Nothing about your projects.
  • Update checks. Bakspace asks updates.bakspace.app whether there is a newer version.
  • Usage reports, if switched on: which features get used, under a random id. Never your writing, titles, file names or email.
  • Error reports, if switched on: what broke and where in the code, with paths and text scrubbed out. Never your writing.

Both report switches are under Settings > General > Reports. They start on, and each can be switched off on its own. The full detail is in the privacy policy.

Updates

Shortly after it starts, Bakspace checks for a newer version and, if there is one, downloads it in the background. Nothing installs on its own: when it is ready, Settings > General shows Restart to update, and the update goes in when you press it. To look straight away, use Bakspace > Check for Updates.
